FFXIV Fore-Edge Book Painting
I play FFXIV online and I used to play primarily as a Summoner. As the class underwent adjustments that changed what I loved most about it I started playing other roles. Lately, I’ve been playing as a White Mage or Reaper but there's an undeniable allure of being a Summoner, and whenever I venture alone into the wilds of Eorzea, I find myself drifting back. Everyone knows that the best part about being a Summoner is the carbuncles. For those uninitiated, carbuncles are magical, chubby rabbit-otter like creatures that valiantly fight by the side of Summoners during fierce battles. They are adorable and I thought a few might look right at home along the edge of my Shadowbringers artbook.
To do this project I started by taking a few in-game screenshots of carbuncles while adventuring through Eorzea. Next, I measured the length and height of the book’s edge so I would know the size of the space I had to work with. Armed with my visual references, I sketched and inked out my carbuncles, eventually making a final draft. Next, I lightly sketched out the carbuncles onto the book’s edge and used Caran d’Ache watercolor pencils to paint them to life. I even added a smokey background to match the books front cover. Lastly, I used a Micron 005 pen for the outline and small details. Is it perfect? No, but perfection wasn't the goal, and though I can see all the flaws, I refuse to let them deter me form enjoying what I made. I am really happy with how the carbuncles turned out, and as an added bonus, I can use the outlines I made in future projects.
I’ve decided that I’m not going to gild the artbook as I don’t want the carbuncles to be hidden from view. Gilding also slightly dims the vibrancy of the artwork underneath it, and I wanted the carbuncles to be as bright as possible. So, shine brightly my beautiful carbuncles; you’ve been summoned to permanently adorn the edge of my book and bring immeasurable happiness to all who see you!
