Amigurumi Rabbit

Usually, I'm all about finding free patterns online, but there was something about the rabbit pattern on KatyMimiToys' Etsy shop that caught my eye. The pattern is called Crochet Pattern Realistic Mini Bunny Rabbit Amigurumi English PDF Tutorial which is an insane pattern name but pretty standard for Etsy. Despite its algorithm-driven name, the pattern was interesting due to its more realistic animal design rather than the run-of-the-mill anthropomorphic style you see every day.

I was already making a few crochet toys for the children of visiting friends and I thought this bunny would be a nice addition. It only took a few hours to make and turned out really cute. The designer put a lot of effort into the pattern, providing clear instructions, photos, and video tutorials. I'd call it an intermediate-level pattern, as beginners might stumble a bit—especially with the directional changes and method of joining the front legs through crocheting rather than sewing. Overall, it’s a quick and simple pattern well worth the price.

I should note that my rabbit looks a little different from the patterns as I didn't get the chance to sculpt or shape the rabbit's head using needle and thread. I just didn’t have the time. Sculpting or shaping would have given the toy a more life-like appearance. Fortunately, the rabbit looks cute unsculpted as well. The kids loved it and that’s all that really matters.

I plan to make this pattern again and practice my sculpting skills. I would like to make the killer rabbit of Caerbarnog from Monty Python’s Holy Grail. I have some white yarn already but the challenge is how best to add blood around his little mouth. I’m not sure if I should buy red yarn or just paint the white yarn red after it’s finished. Decisions, decisions!

I made a two-second Photoshop mock up for inspiration and realized the killer bunny will also need angry eyes. My plan is to find a way to capture his adorable menacing aura.
